Study Title: The Language, Culture, and Phenomenon of Objectification and Shame in the Professional Singing Population.
We are conducting an online qualitative survey about experiences of objectification and shame as a professional singer.
What is this research about?
The survey aims to understand how objectification and the self-conscious emotion of shame affects professional singers. It examines both internal experiences and external factors that contribute to the cultural normalisation of shaming within the singing community. We seek to understand how these experiences impact you personally and professionally.
For every survey received a donation of $10 AUD on your behalf (up to a value of $400) will be made to Australian charity Support Act, which supports Australian musicians and music industry workers in crisis. Visit www.supportact.org.au.
Are you eligible?
For the purposes of this study, all professional (or semi-professional) singers over the age of 18 are invited to participate. For clarity, “professional” in this instance refers to anyone who currently or previously received regular income from singing and who identifies as a semi-professional or professional singer.
You may also participate if you sing only within a group (e.g., professional choir, or music theatre ensemble). However, this must include being paid to sing.
How long will it take?
It is anticipated that it will take 45 minutes to complete this survey but may take longer.
Please note that participation is entirely voluntary, and your decision whether to participate will not affect your relationship with any of the researchers or their institutions.
